Marketing My Memoir

Originally my goals for writing Legacy of a False Promise were three-fold: to work through my trauma, to tell my kids what happened to my family and to express myself through writing.  It was only after the manuscript was complete that another goal – to publish – became the focus of my work. Now that the book is for sale in bookstores and on line, and because it has been well received in Ann Arbor, I’ve begun to concentrate my efforts on a marketing campaign, to complement and extend the one provided by the University of Alabama Press.
My first focus has been to schedule speaking engagements at bookstores and other venues in and out of Ann Arbor. After beginning with a common introduction, I’ve been discussing various topics of interest related to my story.
I’m learning to pitch the book using social networking with the goal of making contact with one person at a time and creating interest in the book.
An important part of this campaign will be to distribute information (and, when appropriate, books and press kits) to media, radio and tv shows and blogs with the hope of getting interviews and reviews. I plan to hire a publicist to help with some of these tasks.
